Cavalier by the Sea is a charming, older beachfront motel offering a nostalgic experience and convenient beach access. Reviews consistently highlight its prime location, friendly staff, and comfortable rooms, although some concern about cleanliness and room amenities has been raised, particularly regarding bathroom conditions and insect presence. Value is high due to its location and affordability.
The only minus is there are no tvs in the bedrooms. Very cute place, great kitchen setup in cottage and I will definitely be back!!
Stay here every year when I come down for my birthday in December. This year I made the reservation for a Saturday. Not knowing that this time of the year they are closed on Saturday. Lillian reached out to me the Wednesday before. She told me about the situation of being closed. But instead of canceling my reservation. They honored it and had me all set up when I got into town. These guys are the bomb. Nice clean rooms and Outstanding customer service.
This is an old style, one story brick motel, that's right on the beach. Nothing flashy, this is the outer banks before it went crazy. I've stayed here over the years a dozen or more times and the main reason I do is because it's right on the beach. It has a swimming pool with a kiddie's pool. And did I mention that it is right on the beach?
Location is perfect! The baby pool is perfect for little ones, although the middle of the pool is deeper than the outer part of the baby pool, but nonetheless I enjoyed it being separate from the adult pool. Not much in the room to store or set things on, like a table… especially if you’re staying for the week. Next morning we had to buy air fresheners for the bathroom, there’s an odd ammonia bleach mold type smell that’s over powering, I suppose from the fact that there is no ventilation such as a fan in the bathroom, and the window is painted shut. We had a carpeted room, not sure if other rooms do, but ours did and our toddlers feet were literally black on the bottom after just an hour running around the room playing. Make sure you pack socks or sandals to wear while inside the room. The ceiling fan was covered in dust as well.
Amazing and cost friendly place to stay! Our room was facing the pool, so we had to walk just a few feet from our door to the pool gate and jump in. It’s very large and easily able to accommodate multiple families. Half of the pool is 9 ft and the other half is 3 to 4 ft which is perfect if you need to corral your children. Right around the corner from our room was the entrance to the beach. Walk up a set of stairs and you’re in the sand! Rooms are sized well and very clean. Beds and pillows were comfortable and the fridge was a much nicer size than I was expecting! Shops and restaurants are very close by, some even within walking distance. Captain George’s is one of our favorite restaurants and they were a seven minute walk. Plenty of places for breakfast, coffee, bagels and donuts are within a couple of miles; can’t beat the convenience! We did have one issue where a group of visitors without a parking pass stole the parking spot in front of our room after hours. They huddled in front of our door and drank for quite a while. We didn’t necessarily classify that as an emergency but it was definitely irritating. I do think there should be more signs that visitors shouldn’t be able to block paying customers that way, let alone get into their allotted space and just loiter. The only problem as far as the motel goes isn’t something everyone will have to deal with, but the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are bolted to the shower wall. My kiddo is 8 and wasn’t tall enough to reach the nozzles, so I had to awkwardly climb in there and assist with not a whole lot of room to work with. Definitely wasn’t worth docking a Star from an earned five Star rating though :)
Staff is very friendly and welcoming. The hotel was a classic that took me back to my childhood when my parents would visit Nags Head. I was in town for one night for an event and it was a short get away. Most important is the rooms are very clean. Hot water and great shower pressure after being in the heat was a blessing. Room was nice and cold and the beds were comfortable. One feature that stands out is the full size refrigerator amd microwave that not mamy hotels have. Love the chairs outside the rooms for front porch sitting. Location is unbeatable as its right on the beach. And its affordable.
My family has been staying at Cavalier by the Sea for about 35 years. The rooms aren't anything fancy, but they are clean and well maintained. The staff is super friendly & helpful. You can't beat the ocean view rooms where all you have to do is walk down a few steps to be right on the beach with the water right in front of you! Giving a heads up, though -- they do not do check-in or check-out on Saturdays because the owners are Seventh Day Adventists. So, be aware of that when calling or booking.
Stayed for a couple nights last minute "" I didn't realize the weekend was the vintage car expo" so everything was crowded and booked.. I do appreciate I found somewhere to stay under that situation, but the only thing nice was the location is great" you walk thru a breezeway to the back ocean facing rooms which is a simple easy walk to the beach..( perhaps those rooms are better than the side near the office and road rooms?) But my experience is the room is very old, outdated not very clean and the bedding left much to be desired also heads up the pillows are like bricks under your head! Very uncomfortable. There was cobwebs in the closet and corner of the room""... the shower was pitiful.. the water took a while to heat up and when it did it came out in such a tiny stream that I could barely shower"" came out less than a trickle" no joke this was not happiness for sure"" everything was falling apart" the door had cracks so large I could see outdoors, the floor carpet was so old & dingy and my socks became dirty walking in the room and the bathroom door probably had been in several flooding situations for it had screws holding the flimsy door together, the room wasn't cheap" and cost for 2 nights $360.00. so I can handle old and vintage but old, dirty, wornout falling apart room I don't handle..to sum it up the place was bad"".. and trust me I wouldn't recommend staying here.. ( I'll tell you who did stay here a bunch of drunk boys with a fraternity that's who had the front ocean facing rooms) so... if your a kid who's sharing a room with a few other boys"" that doesn't care about cleanliness or furniture falling apart this is the place for you!
We absolutely loved our stay. What a treasure and perfect for families. Plus the beach access is amazing! Already planning to come back.
The people were incredibly friendly, the rooms were clean and neat but the views…the views can’t be beat.
