Shutters on the Banks receives mixed reviews, with some guests praising its beach access, comfortable rooms, and convenient location. However, recurring concerns relate to inconsistent room quality, particularly regarding mattresses and building maintenance, as well as potentially unhelpful staff interactions. Recent reviews highlight issues with room assignments and a dismissive response from management to a guest's medical accommodation request.
We had a family emergency and couldnt stay the night. Hotel was helpful and only charged us the one night, instead of the three we had booked. However! Make sure you know where you are booking! Pictures must be of only the tall building. Because the room we were sent to looked absolutely nothing like the pictures. Room was down a very creepy outdoor hall and on the other side of the building on the first floor. Room was dark and really small and tight. Bathroom was even tighter. Was also connected by a door to another room at the back and could hear everything they were saying in the other room. Doors and windows look very old and worn on the outside. Definitely needs some love to the lower building.
I stayed at this oceanfront property during my coastal road trip and absolutely loved waking up to the sound of the waves right outside my window. The location is absolutely perfect because you can walk straight out onto the sandy beach in just a few steps, and they also have nice indoor and outdoor pools which are great for swimming regardless of the weather. My room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable, and the complimentary breakfast they served each morning had a great selection of hot and cold items that gave me plenty of energy for a full day of exploring the area.
Nice location just stay away from the older building with the 2 floors. We stayed older building first floor $182 one night. Building outside needs some work. Paint peeling near doorway, and inside door. The bathroom needs remodeling especially the commode. Apparently it’s either a child’s or for very very short people. Commode seat was maybe 12” off the floor. Very uncomfortable. Sink very slow draining. Beds were ok. The free hot breakfast was good. When checking out the clerk doesn’t ask how was your stay. Guess those days are gone. Very well lit parking area. Have stayed in the taller building. So if you get a choice request them.
The rooms are roomy, comfortable and well decorated. There are several comforts and conveniences ... including a microwave, mini fridge, a Keurig coffee machine and two TVs (one in the bedroom and one in the sitting room). There's an indoor and outdoor pool, an indoor hot tub and an exercise room ... as well as private beach access. Daily breakfast is provided. Today the offering included scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and a waffle making station. There were also mini muffins & cinnamon rolls, several cereals, assorted fruits and a few juices.
As a 78-year-old disabled veteran with severe back issues and a hip replacement, a supportive mattress isn't a luxury for me-it's a strict medical necessity. My wife and I both have disabled license plates, so we specifically look for accommodations that won't exacerbate my condition. Unfortunately, our recent stay at Shutters on the Banks in Kill Devil Hills was a deeply disheartening experience. We booked an eight-day stay through Expedia and were assigned a second-floor room. The mattress was in very poor condition: completely worn out, overly soft, and entirely lacking support. After just one night, I woke up on May 12, 2026, in significant pain. Knowing the room was unfit for my medical needs, I respectfully asked management to cancel the remainder of our stay and issue a prorated refund. Management flatly denied the request. What made matters worse was how dismissive they were. I was told the mattress was a Sealy Posturepedic and only two years old—as if the brand and age somehow erased the actual physical pain it caused. I am sharing this so other seniors, veterans, and anyone with mobility or back issues can beware. I expected basic human understanding and decent customer care given the circumstances, but instead, we were left in pain and out of pocket.
We spent two nights the day after Christmas and had a really nice visit. Very clean room with comfortable beds and accommodations. The shower had great water pressure . This is a pet peeve of mine especially after staying at Air B&B The private beach access was wonderful. Breakfast was plentiful and amazing. Great central location. The only downside is late check in 4:00 pm. They have a heated indoor pool and hot tub we did not have time to use. We plan to stay again ! Happy Customers Tim & Robin Adams
I give service 3 stars because we were there for 3 days and each morning housekeeping would knock and open the door before we could respond. (We found the do not disturb sign behind the lamp on the table when we were packing to leave.) Two morning I told them that we didn't need service and returned in the afternoon to find that they had serviced the room anyhow, and while I appreciate the tidy room I would have preferred they followed my wishes and left it alone. I don't know if they thought that would garner a tip (larger tip) but it didn't. Otherwise the room was very nice and clean, water pressure in the shower was wonderful. We didn't have breakfast there so I'm sure about that. We will most likely stay again next year.
We had a wonderful stay at Shutters on the Banks, even though the weather wasn’t ideal. The hotel is perfectly located right on the beach, protected by a dune. If you want an ocean view, be sure to book a room on the 3rd or 4th floor — those are labeled as “ocean view” on the reservation site. It’s just a few steps over the dune to the sand and surf. Our room was spacious, spotless, with a balcony overlooking the ocean, and equipped with modern amenities. Housekeeping came by daily, and the entire property felt very well maintained. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a pleasant surprise with something for everyone: fresh fruit, waffles, instant oatmeal, hot eggs, bacon, sausage, muffins, bagels, bread, yogurt, milk, juices, coffee, tea, etc. The hot options vary each day, which keeps it interesting if you’re staying for a few mornings. The location is also ideal, with easy access to restaurants and shops throughout Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and Kitty Hawk. Highly recommend this hotel for a relaxing, comfortable stay on the Outer Banks!
Decent place, good location but is definitely a little dated. I was disappointed they do not have private balconies or an elevator at least in the building I was in. Also, I was not impressed with the breakfast, I was expecting more based on other reviews. Staff were nice and attentive. I was staying there for a wedding and there was a Nor’easter the entire weekend (not the hotels fault).
This place was so enjoyable to stay! Heres the pros and cons Pros- very close to the beach and easily accessible.. the indoor pool was nice and warm. Our room was very comfortable. The free breakfast was delicious and I like that they changed it daily so it wasn't the same old 10 out of 10 loved it. They let you use the pool and beach access before and after check out Cons- do not expect an early check in, even 20mins early. We were there hanging out in the pool and walked to the beach. We saw the house keeper working on our room she was done about 2.5 hours before check in even though we called at 1 and asked to be called when our room was ready. They did let us use the pool there was 2 other families that all recieved a call 17-15mins before the actual check in time to tell us our room was ready. ( our ice maker had enough time to make ice before we got in the room) and since we were in the pool we saw the housekeeper leave our room and never go back thats how we were aware it was clean way ahead of time. Some of the ladies at the front desk arent the most pleasant.. no HI,HELLO,BYE when coming in and out of the lobby One part of the concrete was unleveled and my son fell and another kid fell there as well And the biggest con had nothing to do with them.. it was us.. we had to leave, and I didnt wanna leave and its been several days since ive been home and I cant stop thinking about it. I'll be back next summer and I am already ready to book our next stay
