The Avon Motel offers a budget-friendly option close to the beach and local amenities, but experiences vary significantly. Recent reviews highlight both exceptional service and serious cleanliness and maintenance concerns, suggesting inconsistent quality. While some guests appreciate the retro vibe and proximity to the ocean, others have reported issues with room conditions and staff attitudes.
Room that we stayed in was ok and very small and a bit run down. No mirror except for a small one in the bathroom. There's absolutely no room on the bathroom sink to set up anything for your convenience,so, forget about putting bathroom necessities in there. The TV, microwave and teenie tiny refrigerator were basic but adequate. Shower head was weak in pressure - if you let the water run a bit it does get hot. Free bags of ice for everyday you stay here, that was nice. Within walking distance of the beach/ocean, shopping, food, cafe's and coffee shops. This place is pet friendly. Was quiet the 2 nights that we stayed here. It's was just ok, but won't be back as there are a ton of other options available. The photos advertised are a bit deceiving.
Everything about this place is five stars. Stayed here with my dad for a night and absolutely loved it. The staff was really friendly, the rooms were super clean and large, and it was very affordable. And only about a one minute walk from the beach, which had some amazing views. Also 800 feet away from the best hamburger you'll ever eat. I highly recommend.
Huge THANK YOU to Trey at Avon Motel. We were in a bind with our departure date aligning with unfortunate road closures and ferry closures due to weather and storm wash-out; Trey got us a great room for a full day and night at a great price. The room was clean and well equipped, very close to the beach, quiet at night...couldn't ask for more. Our entire family appreciates all of the staff at Avon Motel. We will surely visit again.
I have been visiting the OBX for years and this may be my favorite place to stay. Between renting houses, hotels and camping, this felt the best. I love the color of the exterior and the little sandy sitting/grilling area. Each room has a chair to sit in on the porch, you can see most of the sunset, but if you want to see the entire sunset, drive ten minutes south. The beach is less than five minutes away. Yes, you have to walk through and over the dunes, there are plenty of paths. The AC was great, and there is a cute nook for a microwave and coffee. Room also came with a working mini fridge, I did not try to turn on the TV. Come to Avon Motel if you want to get away from technology and want a pure experience. Come for the beach. I slept well, the bathroom worked fine. I saw one bug. I want to come back.
I recently stayed at Avon Motel and had a fantastic experience! From the moment I arrived, the staff was welcoming and helpful, ensuring I had everything I needed for a comfortable stay. The room was clean, well-maintained, and had all the amenities I could ask for, including a cozy bed, a great TV setup, and fast Wi-Fi. The location is also perfect—conveniently close to restaurants, shops, and local attractions, making it easy to explore the area. The motel offers great value for money, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and affordable place to stay. I'll certainly be back on my next visit!
Very homey feel to everything. Not a 5 star, not a 1 star but everything was clean and in good repair. Took our dogs and they enjoyed themselves and so did we. Staff was extremely helpful and attentive, best part of the stay. Thanks!?
Basic, but clean older motel. Great refrigerator/freezer, microwave, TV and old school coffee pot. Good shower and beds were fine. AC was amazing - even in the extreme heat wave (95+ for the week). Free ice bags provided! Very close beach access - which was unexpected - but wonderful! Located close to stores/restaurants and basically right across the street from a great fresh seafood market! Pet friendly, but pricey. Great that they allow dogs in rooms and have plenty of grassy area for them to enjoy! Had not seen a price for the pups on their site, so I had to inquire. The reply came several days later - and after my free cancellation window. So we were stuck. Upon arrival, I asked if they could do any better on that fee, but they were unwilling. To date: $30 per pet, per night. No max.
We stayed in July. We were happy with the room. I mean, it was rustic, dated, but clean. And staff was helpful and friendly. We visited again at the end of Sept. and it was dreadful. When I saw the room they initially gave us, I didn't know if I wanted to vomit, or cry. My husband told them we needed to upgrade to a King Room. We initially booked the Queen room thinking we would have more space in the room for our dog. However, the room was actually tinier than the King. My husband should have told them the truth. It wasn't necessarily about the lack of space in the room, but more about the room being gross and unacceptable. I won't go into details, but I will never visit the Avon Motel ever again. It's a hit/miss. Either you will have friendly staff, and a decent room, or you will have a nightmare, with a staff who doesn't give a care.
I’m from Western NC and have been to the Outer Banks many times. I saw your hotel featured on The Magnolia Network and I hope to visit your motel in the future. Thanks for the great episode y’all did great!!!!
It was inexpensive. But... It's a pit. We had two rooms, a "6 person suite" (which was just a slightly large standard room with a sofa bed in it) and a "2 person queen bed room"... None of the rooms had doormats! Sand was tracked everywhere! The rooms had hard floors and offered brooms, but there was no way to keep up with the sand that got everywhere. A simple doormat would have helped immensely just to put shoes on/off inside the room (it was raining a lot, the patio was soaking, couldn't do it outside). The suite had nowhere to hang anything! There was one tiny towel bar that could hold one towel (for a room that was intended to accommodate 6 people!). Plus one small hook on the back of the bathroom door. They don't change out towels, so, with nowhere to hang them, they ended up covered in sand and wouldn't dry. There was no closet, it unfortunately rained while we were there, we had raincoats and no where to put them aside from on the floor (or beds if you didn't mind a wet bed). The balcony and porch were soaking wet from rain, so we couldn't use the railings or furniture outside to dry anything. The TV stand/dresser was warped, the top was peeling off, and one drawer was stuck. The single queen bed room had an air conditioner unit that was so loud it shook the floor, walls, and all the furniture in the room, the sound physically hurt. Their "solution" was "you can pay more and we can move you to a room with a king bed". Oh, gee thanks. Your maintenance failure means we have to pay more??? No closet, but this room did have a drying rack on the wall, so several times more area to hang wet items in the 2-person room than the 6-person "suite". The location was nice, easy walk to the beach (through dunes, with poison ivy along the trail - they might want to get on that). The lots did flood significantly in the rain.
