The Tar Heel Motel offers a convenient and affordable base for exploring the Outer Banks, boasting easy beach access and a pool. While generally well-regarded for its cleanliness and location, recent reviews highlight recurring issues with inconsistent hot water, parking challenges, and thin walls leading to noise concerns.
This was our 2nd stay here and we assumed the 1st time, since it was "off" season, thats why it was so quant. Nope....we just left during middle of June and it was just as quiet and relaxing as the first time. Such a cute motel with a pool, easy access to the beach and nice clean rooms! What else could you ask for!
Pros: Close to 2 public beach accesses, close to shops and resturants, fairly quiet road. Comfortable beds and pillows. They provide coffee. Cons: The hot water is very inconsistent. Kept going cold during my shower. The parking is very tight if fully booked. I had 2 connected rooms, we left to go out and put the do not disturb signs on our doors. Came back and the cleaners had came in anyway and shut and locked the interior adjoining doors.
This motel is great! Great location love everything around two things to note is that you can kind of hear everything and anything walls are super thin, but it wasn’t really an issue because people are quiet at night room was clean and neat only other nitpicky thing is that the curtains could probably use a wash cause they look a little dingy and stained. Other than that wonderful!
The room was so pretty and clean! and public beach access right across the road! I could smell the beach air from the room, i loved it! This motel was so lana del rey coded. i love it!! i will be back!!
After a long day of traveling, we checked in to this motel and were immediately taken back by the smell of cigarette smoke. We propped open the door and opened the window, which did not help. And while we were waiting to see if the smoke dissipated, we tried to turn on the t v and we could get it to come on. We called the number and found that they were only open from 9 to 5 So we left a message and have not heard back from this motel. We are extremely allergic to cigarette smoke and could not stay but was hoping someone would call us back, and maybe there would be another room. That was available but still have not heard back from anyone. My neighbor and I have stayed here previously and we thought it was the cutest room and everything was great. But this time was a total disappointment, and we are still waiting for someone to call us back.So we have had to find another hotel room.
The only reason I didn't leave this motel was because I had a non refundable rate and no money to get another room someplace else. We had a dog, so we had a pet room. The carpet was so stained and urine soaked it made my eyes run and my nose and throat burn. I wouldn't step foot on the carpet unless I had my shoes on. I couldn't wait to get out of there. The AC unit was just shy in decimals of a jet plane with a "f" upped engine. Unless you hate yourself, don't spend your money on this stinky, gross, loud motel. PS: the dumpster gets emptied at 3:00a.m. Incase you managed to fall asleep and need a wake up call.
I was really hoping that this would be a really nice motel, close to the beach, as we paid $209.23 (including tax) for 1 night - which is funny, because they "bait" you with this $84 advertisement, but when you actually book the room, it's nowhere near that price. When we got there, parking was strange - parallel parking in front of your room, IF nobody else had taken your spot. We were fortunate to have a small car, and got very close to our room. I missed the email with the door code to our room, so I went to the "Front Desk" door, which was locked. Turns out that the owners don't live here, or run the motel on a daily basis, they have hired "attendants" who also serve other motels. A quick phone call, however, and I got my room code. When we walked in, the room was old and not renovated, to say the least. My first impressions were of a 30-year-old motel that had been ravaged by the hurricanes and bad weather. The photos made the room look good, but in person, it was really shabby. The room was also just FULL of small black flies. They were EVERYWHERE and probably coming into the room around the window air conditioner. Thankfully, we weren't in the room long, as we did walk down the street to a beach crossing - which was close! We went to the pool on our way back, but the outdoor shower (to wash the sand off of us) was broken and inoperative. We did our best not to get sand in the pool. Fifteen minutes later, a "pool attendant" came to close the pool for the night. We advised him that the shower/s were broken, and showed him, and he said, "Yeah, they've known about that since last year!" Then he shrugged it off and booted us from the pool. I can always find a positive thing to say about a motel - there was a toaster oven (which none of our other hotel stays had) and my shower was hot, (although the bathroom was horrible.) I took a bunch of photos of the flies in the room, but they didn't show up well in the other photos unless you zoomed way in, and then it was pointless to share them, so I only posted two. To summarize, the room was in disrepair, the motel is in disrepair. It was right next door to the Dunes Restaurant, which was sort of an overpriced Perkins. We're going back next year, and for sure, we'll find a better place to stay.
This Motel is super cute and located in a great spot. Our room was very clean and had a bunch of amenities such as a coffee maker, fridge, microwave, toaster oven, and a kitchen sink. The bathroom was on the smaller size but has everything you could need, it had the standard toiletries, only thing that was missing was a blow dryer. The AC worked great and kept the room very cold. The front office is staffed during the day and they have an emergency number for after hours issues. All of the staff was extremely helpful and made sure to always check if we needed anything! Parking was right in front of the room and very easy to navigate, if you have more than one vehicle there is overflow parking areas as well. The pool area was small but was very nice and looked well maintained, the beach access is an easy 3 minute walk from the property.
I recently just stayed on the 19th. For the price, the room was perfect for my 1 day stay. Affordable, clean, and offered everything you find in most hotel rooms. My only knock would be a few things. A. The water pressure could use a MAJOR upgrade. Bringing in sand with the combination of crappy water pressure makes for a messy shower. B. The parking situation is not ideal. In order to exit the parking lot you got to either back up to the road or go to the end of the building and turn around with LIMITED space. The motel needs at least a 1 way paved road going around both buildings. C. There’s no one at the front desk in the afternoon. Definitely an inconvenience. I understand this isn’t a hotel where there’s someone working third shift but at the very least have someone at the front desk until 8/9 p.m. It provides better customer service rather than over a phone.
My fiancé and I had a wonderful 5 night stay here last week! The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. The motel is affordable and right across from the beach so it’s just a short walk to the public beach access. The pool was nice to dip in after a long day lounging on the hot sand. The bed was very comfortable! Also, really enjoyed that all you needed to do to get into your room was enter a code and you didn’t have to deal with the typical check in process since we arrived late. Anytime we ran into the staff they asked us if we needed anything, which we appreciated. We will definitely be staying here if we’re ever in the Outer Banks again!
