The Seahorse Inn and Cottages offers budget-friendly accommodations in the Outer Banks, providing convenient access to local attractions and the beach. However, recent reviews consistently highlight cleanliness and maintenance issues, particularly in the rooms and bathrooms, alongside concerns about staff responsiveness and inconsistent booking practices.
We stayed at the Sea Horse Inn for 3 days recently. It’s fine. It is what I expected for what I paid. I’m not sure what some of these reviewers here are expecting. This is one of the cheapest properties in all of the OBX. Don’t expect Club Med. For us the worst thing was the couch. It was filthy. Should be cleaned or replaced. We covered it with an extra blanket from the room. The bed was comfy and bedding was clean. The bathroom was clean albeit a bit beaten up. The shower had acceptable pressure and hot water. Tip; pay a little extra for a kitchenette room. You get a little cottage on the ground floor with parking right in front. Also, they have a nice little shaded sitting area right outside the door. We used this area a lot. Being across the street from Cahoon’s market is a huge bonus. We walked over several time a day for our needs. I would consider staying here again.
We have stayed twice. The first time was in the cottages. They were okay. They are older so you can't expect modern etc. You'll share a connecting door with whoever is in the cottage next to you but it does lock. However, the walls are thin so be prepared to hear everything and it was moldy(beach life). We decided this time to stay in the hotel to see if it was any better and we were only staying one night before going to our condo. This will for sure be the last time. Hotel room is spacious but the sheets were dirty, the towels were dirty, there was hair in the shower and a hair clip in the floor. Clearly not cleaned well. The positive, they allow pets, across from Jeanette's Pier , right next to Sam and Omies and the people are really nice that own it.
2” long roachs. Not even the room we were supposed to be getting. Stove don’t work right. Person at the desk is clueless.Floor is about 2” out of level. Do not stay at this place. Person you are booking the room from is a third party.Price’s are not consistent.
DO NOT STAY HERE OR EVEN CONSIDER IT! PICTURES ARE DECEIVING! Made reservations for a cottage with kitchenette. Upon arrival was given a small, outdated one. Cottage was extremely wet inside from condensation, the bed, windows, mirrors, floor and had an awful musty stench. Extremely small, outdated and run down. Loud neighbors in adjoining cottage. Went straight to office for resolution and was told they were booked up and had no more rooms or cottages available. My wife and I went elsewhere to stay. I went though Booking.com for my reservation and after contacting them several times for help (NOT) and disputing the charges and Booking.com's policy, I am out several hundred dollars! DO NOT GET CAUGHT UP LIKE WE DID! DO NOT CONSIDER STAYING HERE and don't use Booking.com to your make reservations, they will leave you hanging in situations like ours!!
We booked here just for a place to lay our heads a few extra days before our beach house was ready for the week. We rented one of the rooms and honestly for the price it was just what we expected. We did have to use the virtual check-in, it went smoothly. The owner was on site which was good because both our keys needed re-programmed due to us having them close to our phones earlier that day. All in all I would stay again. The only real downfall was we were on the top floor & although the view was nice, my knees were feeling it by the last day. Location wise it was awesome, walking distance to the pier, ice cream and even a few options for lunch or dinner.
We were very disappointed with this location. Our check-in experience was terrible. It was with a virtual agent at a kiosk who couldn’t understand anything we were saying. She asked for information that had already been provided prior to our arrival, including a credit card number and driver's license picture. She was very lackadaisical and not personable at all--never smiled or said anything welcoming. There was no staff on site for the entire stay. During the online check-in prior to our arrival, we were asked if we wanted daily cleaning of the room for free, so we checked yes, and it came back "denied." So why even ask if it's not available? The room was very small, and the shower and tub were in the main part of the room, not in the actual bathroom. There was also a large hole under the door that needed to be sealed. The hotel is way across the street from the actual beachfront. There are signs saying to not track sand into the room but nowhere to wash off your feet. The one positive thing is the hotel is located close to a lot of restaurants and attractions, and there's a nice walking/bike path on the road.
BIG YIKES. As soon as we walked in the room, it smelled of mildew and cigarettes (even though this was non-smoking). Biggest red flag for me: a fly swatter?? Well not 10 minutes into our stay, a giant cockroach appeared in the corner of the room. As soon as my partner shut the door to go to management, it crawled back into the crevice of the ceiling. Hell no. The ceiling was those panels that can easily be lifted up. Lot of open areas for them to hide. We were able to get a different room, from 1st floor to 3rd (top) which was slightly better, proper ceiling. The previous tenant took a hand towel and wrapped it around the smoke alarm, clearly to not get caught smoking. Safety? What's that? We took it down so we wouldn't be accused of doing that. Bathrooms are the size of closets no matter what, and does not air out well. Hence the mildew smell no matter what room you pick. In general this building is definitely not well maintained. Water damage, holes in wooden floors, etc. No elevator, but a pulley system outside, not that I've seen anyone use it. Location is 5 stars because you can walk to a couple restaurants and the beach. But it wasn't worth it to me AT ALL.
Before we even entered, we could see some leftover dog food (this will be an issue later) on the doormat. The room seemed good enough at first sight (although it smelled absolutely like a public pool because of the extensive use of chlorine), maybe a bit primitive and dated. The morning after, I woke up with several insect bites on my left arm. I first thought, that it was bed bugs, but after closer inspection and consulting with my mother, we realised these were butes from probably dog fleas. So this concludes, that the previous guests had their dog sleep on the bed, which of course is unsanitary, but I highly doubt that with properly cleaning this room, this would have been an issue. Just don't book it folks. It's not clean and the building seems to be falling apart, by the looks of it, it probably wasn't or poorly renovated after the last hurricane. They at least got two stars for their proximity to the beach, shops and restaurants.
Do NOT book with this place. I had a reservation in August that I requested to be canceled and refunded due to a hurricane in the area, making us be unable to drive and stay there. I have been calling leaving messages with multiple receptionists and sending multiple emails to the manager's email address but still have been being ignored by management. I had Expedia get involved, management has been ignoring their phone calls as well. I had my credit card company get involved, management ignored their calls as well. I'm being forced to pay 700 for a trip I didn't even TAKE. I was guaranteed a refund by both the hotel and Expedia since it was a hurricane hitting during that reservation week. This place is a joke and management doesn't even exist.
On August 13 I made a reservation for my son. I entered the wrong date and immediately called to cancel. This was obviously my fault. The person I spoke to said she couldn't cancel but to call the manager the next day. We have made 6 phone calls, left messages, emailed & have not spoken to a manager. I have also contacted the parent company MKL hospitality group with no response. At this point I just want a response and explanation of why they couldn't call or email back.
