The Comfort Inn South Oceanfront offers a prime beachfront location and friendly staff, but numerous reviews highlight significant issues with cleanliness, maintenance, and operational problems. While some guests praise the views and pet-friendliness, many report outdated facilities, unpleasant odors, and concerning safety hazards. Overall, the property’s current condition significantly detracts from the guest experience and value.
The biggest strength about this hotel is the view and close proximity to the beach and other activities, as you can exit the building and be situated right near the ocean. Also, the staff at the front desk were incredibly friendly. The bad, however, overwhelmingly overshadows the good. We got a dog-friendly room, so a little bit of a smell is to be expected, but the whole room smelled extremely musty; like wet dog, urine, and mold mixed together. Other than the stagnant odor during our whole visit, we were missing a second chair and table for the outside balcony, it was almost impossible to get new towels, the furniture was stained and ripped (see photos), and we found a live roach crawling over the bedside table on our last day. Personally, I can’t justify spending the amount of money we did on this room especially after finding a literal roach wandering around. Otherwise, the breakfast was just okay. The pool didn’t look like the pictures and was definitely not big enough to take a good swim in. The two elevators are oddly small and slow for serving seven floors. For now, I cannot recommend this hotel. There are other better options in Nags Head.
Very disappointed in this comfort inn. I upgraded to an ocean view rooms but the windows were so filthy I couldn't see out. Obviously hadn't been cleaned from the salt water on the outside in a very long time. The hallways and the rooms themselves are showing age very banged up scratched up lots of damage everywhere just not appealing to look at. Carpets are old and grungy Glad I only stayed two nights here was happy to check out and go elsewhere. Only good part about this comfort inn was the front desk staff was very polite and helpful.
While I don't expect a lot from Comfort Inn, this was worse than any hotel, motel, or rental I've stayed in. The room wasn't cleaned (pee on the bathroom floor, hair in the tub, poop in the toilet, toothpaste on the mirror, dirty microwave, etc.), but we got some clorox wipes and kept going! The furniture and fixtures throughout were falling apart and rusted. There was a big crack down the shower wall, the sink was clogged, but the worst was the huge hole in the ceiling, which was a safety issue. All of this combined was too much to overlook, so we cut our trip short and left early the first morning. The only upsides: the view was great, and the staff was very nice.
This hotel is well located on the south end of the island. They are pet friendly and the views are amazing. The hotel is older but we were very comfortable and our rooms were nice, clean and well equipped. This place is a great value and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have all the amenities at a lower price
My wife and I stayed at this hotel 3 times over the past two years. (We went twice with a birding group.) The views of the ocean from the premium priced rooms are indeed breathtaking. But I emphatically agree with most of the negative comments you will find on this page. The breakfasts are as frugal as they can possibly make it—not nearly as good as at Hampton Inns. Reconstituted “scrambled eggs” and fatty bacon are the highlight of their offerings. Although the staff is friendly enough, they will not help you if things go wrong. And for me things went seriously wrong when I slipped and fell on the slick tiles of the main entrance. There was some kind of slime on the walkway that got all over my clothing. They hastened to put down a few cones and some sand or salt, but this was insufficient. I asked them to comp the room, but they refused and instead referred me to their insurance company. In all, it was a painful experience that my wife and I never intend to repeat.
Location was perfect! Quiet and clean. Breakfast was traditional but very good. Staff was fun and friendly
To: Jenni Scott, General Manager, and the Comfort Inn South Staff Comfort Inn South – 8031 Old Oregon Inlet Road, Nags Head, NC 27959 I recently visited the Outer Banks for Thanksgiving and stayed at the Comfort Inn South in Nags Head. From the moment I checked in to the moment I checked out, my experience was truly exceptional. Tavia and Sheena at the front desk exceeded every expectation. Their warm greetings, genuine smiles, and welcoming presence immediately set the tone for a wonderful stay. It’s clear that the entire team works hard to create a comforting, home-away-from-home environment for every guest. What was meant to be a simple holiday getaway became something far more meaningful. My oceanfront room offered not just a beautiful view, but a peaceful, healing space where I felt safe, comfortable, and cared for. Every need I had was met with attentiveness and professionalism. Thank you for making my stay so memorable. I highly recommend this location to anyone visiting the OBX. With so many lodging options available, this is one I will absolutely keep at the top of my list for future trips. Warm regards, Antoinette Weathers
Could not be much worse - would recommend avoiding this one. The building is old and both looks and acts old, despite attempts at renovation, but many of the problems that we encountered could have avoided with active and dedicated management, and ongoing maintenance. Twice in four days the elevator was out: one of the cars did not work at all; the other intermittently; so, several unpleasant walks up to the seventh floor. Parking was inadequate, leading to guests driving in circles and ultimately parking in nondesignated areas because there was no provision for overflow. Room was very noisy - thin walls apparently. "Free breakfast" was notably weak, not at all on a par with Best Western, Fairfield, etc. All of the above plus the fact that the place is NOT inexpensive. Will certainly not return.
We were forced to reroute our vacation due to flooding along Rt 12 (Pea Island). However our luck took a positive turn when we were able to get into this hotel as soon as we received the news. Making the reservation on the fly was effortless and the staff on site were kind and extremely helpful….definitely five stars!!! Another big plus is Comfort Inn South Oceanfront allows dogs. And that’s where the high marks end. One operational elevator isn’t ideal and the air in the room was stale and smelt of mildew and perhaps dog urine…..hard to tell with how humid the room was. We rushed to turn the ac on and it struggled to make a difference. The room itself was “clean” but the smell. In addition the double beds were disappointingly hard. Yes we understand that we were lucky due to our circumstance but I would suggest that the hotel owner(s) invest in our sleeping comfort since “comfort” is in their name. You have great staff despite subpar product. As IHG members we were surprised since the product is typically much better.
A lot of these reviews had me skeptical, but I did not run into any issues that previous people had. It could be that we went at a slightly off season in mid September, but the hotel was still very busy. We stayed on the 3rd floor, which seemed to be the dog floor and was perfect for our Bassett hound. Everything about the stay was fine other than a few minor things. The hotel is in a perfect location and staff are friendly and do not hound you. Very pet friendly location and they even have a resident cat. Minor things was the breakfast was not good, specifically the sausage patties were not cooked enough and eggs were bland. Coffee was terrible and could not drink. The lobby had a very strong scent of fragrance and half the time the key card did not work and had to try it several times to open the door. My main concern was the elevator based on the previous reviews and we did not have any issues with it. Overall I would definitely stay here again.
