Recent reviews of the Home2 Suites by Hilton Outer Banks Kill Devil Hills paint a concerning picture, dominated by cleanliness issues, noise complaints, and a lack of consistent service. While some guests appreciate the location and kitchenette, widespread problems with roach infestations, elevator malfunctions, and poor upkeep suggest significant improvements are needed.

As a Hilton Honors Diamond member, I can honestly say that I’ve never had a more disappointing stay at a Hilton location. In fact, I feel like I’m staying at a low budget Motel 6 on the east side of Chicago. The hotel is loud, dirty and poorly kept. Our room didn’t feel clean and that was solidified by the large roach who greeted us upon our arrival. I will say, after finding discarded water bottles and open potato chip bags under the bed, roaches probably do feel more comfortable than humans at this location and they are certainly well fed. Our “ocean view” was obscured by the hotel’s entire air conditioning system which was practically connected to our balcony. Our room was so noisy because boiler room was directly behind the headboard. We stayed in 309 and it sounded like jet planes were landing right behind our heads….all damn night. Breakfast was okay, but once the idea entered my mind that roaches crawled on the food prior to it being served, I lost my appetite. I also watched the breakfast attendant actively chase a roach across the floor of the breakfast area until she lost sight of it. We tried to wash our clothes in the hotel’s guest provided laundry room, but the washing machines didn’t work and when I called the front desk to ask for assistance, I was met with an “I don’t know.” Completely useless. Also, while the hotel cannot control the cleanliness of the beach, the beach was dirty and trash lined the dunes. It’s sad to say, but this part of the OBX feels like being on a Carnival cruise at tax time.

The staff is great, you cannot beat the location. If you have the ground floor, you will literally walk out onto the beach. The pool is small but nice. Breakfast is wonderful. The reason it gets four stars instead of five is because there seem to be constant problems during our day even though this was a pretty new hotel. The elevator maintenance room was wide open and smelled of burning rubber the whole time we were there. And there is some kind of noise in the wall that I guess must be related to either the Plumbing or the ventilation but the first night I thought someone wasVacuuming at random points during the night, By the Second night, I could not sleep because the vacuuming chainsaw noise woke me up at least twice an hour. I heard it through the day too, so now I think I must’ve just been so exhausted our first day that I didn’t hear it immediately. It may just be rooms near the elevator, but we were closer to the pool in the elevator, so I really can’t figure it out. So what I would say is that I would absolutely stay here again, but I would bring a white noise machine. And a broom. And paper towel towels. Because the rooms don’t have either of those things and if you have a kitchen, you need paper towels, and if you have sand, you need a broom.

I booked this property for a weekday summer stay for my kids at the beach. I’m picky and know that resort areas can be hit or miss because let’s face it….in vacation mode you overlook certain things. I splurged for a higher floor ocean facing room and wasn’t disappointed. I know this used to be a non-Hilton property….so the bones are old and layout of the property is a little wonky. However, I feel the remodel was great. We had room 403. The main bedroom was in the back by the hallway. It offered a spacious bathroom and nicely tiled shower. It has a kitchenette with a refrigerator/freezer that’s about 3/4 the size of a normal one…..it was perfect. Kitchenette has a nice prep space, open cabinets and the essentials (dish towels, dishes and silverware). The living room area was huge with a small table, chairs and a sofa sleeper. The space had a nice tiled floor so none of that nasty gross carpet you find in rooms of resort areas. I was impressed by how much cabinetry and drawers were offered. Overall a very nice space. It’s very close to the Wright Brothers National monument. Across the street is a great little general store (snacks, supplies, booze, sandwiches). Down the street a bit is a shop that sells all your t-shirts and beachwear. It’s a quick and safe walk. We drove a few minutes away to Wawa for food and gas. It’s close to grocery options like Publix, Food Lion and Harris Teeter. Be sure if you want a beach view to book 4th or 5th floors and I recommend rooms 1 thru 8 on each floor for the best beach/water view as it faces the water straight on. Room numbers 9-14 face it at an angle or obstruct the view a bit. The beach is nice and wasn’t overcrowded….plenty of space. I was at the beach in under 5 minutes to catch the sunrises. Downsides? I discovered when using some of the utensils and cutting board that (apparently) the guests before weren’t much into cleaning up after themselves. They left dried parsley on the cutting board. I ended up washing everything we used just to be safe. (Dish soap included). They offer a per clean up area on the side of the building but apparently not enforced. The breakfast is OK but on par with US hotel free breakfast (it’s so-so). The hallways to the rooms still have that well worn carpet that’s kind of gross. One super slow elevator. All of which I’m OK with as long as rooms are nice.

The location was great! Beachside access was convenient. There are lots of places to eat nearby. The pool was decent. Due to them being beachside it would have been nice to get beach towels. When we asked for towels they told us not to take them to the beach. What's the point of being oceanfront when you can't even provide beach towels? My father-in-law got stuck in the elevator and it took them an hour before someone realized there was an issue. The help button in the elevator wasn't working and he was stuck for at least 1.5 hours. They changed the breakfast up everyday so that was nice. The staff who worked the breakfast was friendly. Ben at the front desk was super friendly and helpful. The service for the room was supposed to come every other day. We stayed for 6 nights and only had one day of proper service. The rest of the days we were taking out our own towels and throwing away our trash. One day that we were supposed to get our room serviced, they left a bunch of towels on the bathroom sink and half of them were on the floor. They had messily made the beds. I've never had this kind of experience at a hotel before, especially one that's oceanfront and charges a decent nightly rate. If I knew this was the situation I would have just stayed at a bnb. I don't think I would come back here again.

We had a really enjoyable stay at Home2 Suites and would definitely come back. From the cleaning staff to the front desk team, every woman we interacted with was genuinely warm, welcoming, and hospitable. That kind of consistent friendliness makes a big difference and really set the tone for our stay. There were a couple of minor issues—like the TV in our living room not working—but honestly, it didn’t feel worth switching rooms. We had already been upgraded to a top-floor oceanfront suite, which was such a great perk that we didn’t want to give it up. One thing that really stood out was how well-equipped the suite was. They offer induction burner cooktops at no extra charge, which is such a thoughtful touch for guests who want to cook and feel more at home. Even better, the pots and pans were Made In brand, which adds a level of quality and prestige you don’t usually see in hotel kitchen setups. Also, small detail but worth mentioning—the hairdryer was literally brand new, which just reinforced how well they maintain and refresh their amenities. Overall, we loved the spacious, apartment-style setup right on the water, especially for the price. It felt like a great value for what we got.

Ocean Reef review The good - The second shift receptionist was very kind and friendly. They were willing to replace the TV that had a white line through the screen. The bad - They were unwilling to find a microwave in an empty room (There were only ten cars in the parking lot) to replace the one that had broken in our room. Very run down and neglected. The blankets were worn thin and one had a hole in it. Dead bugs and spider eggs surrounded the door to our room. Mulch from nearby landscaping had blown into the pool leaving it looking dirty. We were told a pool cleaner would come, but in our two-night stay, that did not happen. The plexiglass that should have been attached to the railing on our patio had broken off. We were surprised that there were no towel racks. If you wanted to reuse the same towel for a second shower, you’d have to figure out a way to hang it to dry. We considered upgrading our room, but the two units we looked at were so worn and frayed that it was not worth the $78 a night (plus taxes) upcharge. They said that Hilton is going to revamp this hotel. I would not return until that reconstruction and decorating is complete.

We stayed during Labor Day Weekend and everything was just as pictured. Sherri, the lady up front was super nice and helpful. We stayed on the 3rd floor and enjoyed having the balcony overlooking the pool and ocean. Having a toddler with us and the beach so close was a huge plus! Ive read some of the other recent reviews and unsure what some were as the hotel didn’t have things like a hot tub or garden??? This is definitely a place we would stay at again! First and last time. - The property needs some basic maintenance. Gardens are almost non existing and there is a lot of rust on door frames and other metal areas. Although this can be expected so close to the sea, continuous maintenance takes care of this and gives a nice clean, well looked after feeling. Lots of things lying around all over the show and one can see that there is no general care being taken to tidy up areas such as the pool with chairs and other things lying around. You are greeted in the reception area by a huge bin with all the day's washing parked next to the lift while the staff, that are not readying to go for a smoke just outside reception, are folding washing on the reception desk. We did not sleep much between midnight and 04:00 on the first night due to our neighbors shouting and screaming, running up and down the hallway and slamming the door. Upon reporting this, I was made to believe that I was lying as the representative at reception apparently went to check and heard nothing, although I have recordings of people screaming, shouting and singing at the top of their voices. I played these to the person at reception on the second evening when I asked that they please ensure these guests are asked to please be respectful and keep it down. The way in which the owner./manager handled the situation was one of denial and really not conducive to any amicable resolution. Although unruly guests are something that can happen, how you deal with it is what sets you apart. In summary, this is not value for money and you'd do well to spend you $ somewhere else. The room was nice and clean.

This place is a complete scam. The rooms are not clean. The pool was closed down by the health department as the whole hotel should be. A worker was pouring Clorox in the pool. There was condensation all over the walls & ceilings; black mold on the floor. We had to leave it was so bad. We were told to call the next day and speak to the manager who would be in at 7:00. When we called, no manager. Stopped by and the two ladies (if you would even call them that the way they talked) at the front desk proceeded to curse me out and tell me to leave their property. Would not allow my pets to stay here. I hope the health department shuts this place down. Ended up at urgent care.

Look out! This hotel advertises clean rooms, free breakfast, coffee maker in your room — my in-laws, who are 65+, received none of that. They brought a cup of bugs to the front desk that they collected from their room; the receptionist said “Ooh.. that shouldn’t be there…” They noted the receptionist had a nasty attitude when they asked for compensation and I experienced it for myself when I called asking for a refund on their behalf. The receptionist explained that the bugs were water bugs — as if that makes anything better. As for her explanation regarding the dirty floor (their feet were black just from walking around) — “the coloring of the floor is coming off.” HUH??? My father in law did remark about the view, however, so I guess they’ve got that going for them! Save your time, money (and sanity) and book elsewhere!
