The Colonial Inn Motel is a historic beachfront property located in Nags Head, offering a budget-friendly option with direct beach access and proximity to the pier and surrounding attractions. While offering convenient access to local amenities, guests should be aware of its age and potential for minor maintenance issues and noise from neighboring rooms.
This is a charming, old timey motel, not a huge corporate modern vacationplex. The paint is old, it's a little musty. It's an old building directly behind a sand dune, that's probably survived dozens of storms. It's not luxurious but totally adequate for a seaside vacation! They do their best to keep it clean despite the age and wear and tear on the building. You can't beat an oceanfront room for $100 a night! I had a room with a screen so I got to experience ocean breezes while I slept. Anyone complaining needs to spend more for a newer, fancier place. They are also dog friendly for a fee. They provide plenty of towels and the front desk staff are very kind. Bars/restaurants are in walking distance.
We really were pleasantly surprised at how quaint and clean our room was. It had charming characteristics of its age (I think 1947?), and gave cozy vibes. The decorative towels left for us on each bed was a nice touch. The kiosk check in was quick and smooth. I was in and out of the office in 5 minutes with room key cards and car pass. We spent a lot of time at the beach & exploring the outer banks each day and returned to a fresh bag of nice clean towels outside the door each afternoon. You won’t be able to see the ocean from most rooms (including ours, but a short walk through the ocean-front part of the building and you will find that the view is incredible. The building is steps from the sand and ocean. Note- the dunes at the outer banks are different than other places we’ve stayed and it’s a fairly steep walk back to the motel from the ocean but it’s a pretty short walk and the small motel and first floor room is something that I really like. Also, the parking lot is small, no doubt, but it is appropriate for its age & would be about impossible to be made any larger.l. I drive an excursion so the parking was tight but manageable. The location was worth any tight squeezes getting in and out of the parking lot. And other patrons were friendly and offered my son great advice on fishing. We loved being next to Nag’s Head fishing pier and enjoyed the food/wings offered there also. My son and I made great memories at Nag’s Head & will hopefully be back to enjoy another stay at Colonial Inn. Keep in mind the era of this charming little motel and you won’t be disappointed! It was a bargain, especially considering it is beach front!
The owner was so sweet and kind. He made sure our 3rd party site was a smooth experience, and I would recommend staying here pet friendly and kid friendly too. Ocean front without costing a arm and a leg.
I give it 1 star because 0 is not a option!! My compliments to the PHOTOGRAPHER!! They didn't have our reservation that we booked, the " owner " tried to give us a 2 bedroom ,2 king beds for the same price, THERE WAS JUST 2 OF US!! when he showed us the room ,he opened the door & i saw something on the floor, i saw it also, he stepped on it to hide it there was another one in the bed room dead! I asked him if the COCKROACHES were complimentary! We RAN out of there as fast as we could.
Colonial inn is located right next to nags Head Pier. The rooms are very clean , they have good service and the Rams are reasonably priced. It has direct beach access and a couple steps from The Pier makes it really nice. I enjoyed my stay and the convenience because it's right in the middle of everything. And I have a awesome pool in the front.
Stayed here for a long weekend and had a really great experience! Check in was easy and maintenance was very friendly. Location couldn't have been better. We were right next to the pier which had a great restaurant we went to every day and very close to Jockeys Ridge. The room was studio style with a small kitchen and bathroom which served exactly what we needed for a 3 night stay, although could have updated appliances for longer stays. There was also a nice beach front patio that we enjoyed sitting at in the evenings to look at the stars. It was exactly the kind of lowkey and quaint beach front place we were looking for. It felt like being at home and not a hotel. There was also a pool, free wifi, free ice, and easy parking. They also allow pets for $25 a night if you want. Will definitely book here again!
We had a pleasant stay at Colonial Inn in Nags Head! The location is fantastic—just steps away from the beach, which made it super convenient to go back and forth throughout the day. I was honestly a bit apprehensive going in because of some of the online reviews, but with reasonable expectations, we found everything to be just fine. Our room was clean, spacious, and the AC worked well, which was a relief during the summer heat. The check-in process is a little different—it is done through a virtual kiosk with a live person on video chat—but the lady helping us was very friendly and made the process smooth. The pool was clean and deeper than expected, which was nice. Parking is definitely tight, so be prepared for that. On the bright side, there is frozen yogurt within walking distance, which was a fun little bonus. As for dining, we tried the restaurant at the pier, but were disappointed. The wait was long, the food quality was lacking, and one of my dishes was nearly served raw until I sent it back. All in all, Colonial Inn was a good place to stay—especially for the location. Just go in with proper expectations and you will likely enjoy your time like we did!
Coming from upstate NY. Had a great time with our 2 dogs at a fair price. So much to do close to this location. Food, fishing, shopping, beach. Staff was very helpful while respecting our privacy
My husband and I came down with my grandson and my daughter and our little dog. The rooms are big, the kitchen was perfect and the location was the best!( Right next to the pier. )Each bedroom has a king size bed that was very comfortable. The bathroom is a little small but it served it's purpose! The staff were absolutely wonderful. Seriously the nicest people, very friendly and helpful. We come down a few times a year but have overlooked this little spot... We will definitely be staying here again!
Older building that is reasonably updated. Huge TV. Reasonably priced. Located on the beach. Pet friendly. Clean rooms. Easy to hear through walls. Wall mounted soap, hair and body wash. Swimming pool. Ice machine. Easy check in and out. Snug/tight fitting parking area. Not the greatest looking place on the beach. But for the money I would stay there again.
